Men and Women in Islam

So I have been terrible about writing posts but I am watching Yusuf Estes talk about women is Islam and he has such a great way of explaining things, alhamdulillah, so I decided I had to write about it.

One of the most common questions Muslims get from non-Muslims relates to women in Islam and whether they are equal. Our tendency is to say yes because we know that the impression of how women are treated is completely wrong but then someone with some knowledge will ask why women don't inherit the same as a man and then it gets tricky.

What Yusuf Estes said was that women are not equal in Islam because men and women are not the same. We were created different, women have abilities men do not have and vice-versa. So are women treated equally? No. But they are treated fairly. Allah (swt) is always fair in what he commands of us. So women do not inherit as much but women can keep that money for themselves while a man is responsible to support his wife, children, mother, sisters, etc. So a woman gets less but gets to keep more to spend on herself or she can receive a reward for using the money to support her family or for charity if she chooses.

Islam acknowledges that men and women are different. In general Muslims are more traditional in that men generally work and women generally stay home and take care of the children. This is not a requirement but those roles fit into how we are created and the ways in which men and women are different. Women can work but again if they do they do not have to use the money the earn on the family, they can keep it for themselves.

Well this is a huge topic but I wanted to write something short about this. I am sure I have not said this nearly as well have Yusuf Estes. Anything I said right is from Allah and any mistakes are from me.
